Heads up, landline users! The new Sacramento ‘279’ area code is rolling out soon (March 10th to be exact), so you should start getting used to dialing area codes, if you aren’t already. Landline users WILL have to dial:
1 + area code + 7 digit number
even if you are calling within the same area code. Mobile phone users don’t need to dial the 1. Beginning February 10 (this month!) your call will NOT go through if you forget the area code! Then beginning March 10th, they will start giving out the new 279 numbers.
HOW THIS AFFECTS YOU: This doesn’t really affect people using cell phones unless for some reason you saved everyone’s number without the 916, and I’m sure that you will figure out the change very quickly if your call doesn’t go through. But some not-so-obvious things that this may affect include pre-programmed systems like speed dial, call forwarding, alarm systems, and security doors/gates. Businesses should also start including the area code on marketing for local customers.
Our little city is growing up! Welcome to the new Sacramento, 279.
